Parley ("we", "us", or "our") is operated by Morris Su. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use the Parley mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service"). Please read it carefully.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account via Apple Sign-In or Google Sign-In, we receive your email address and a unique identifier from that provider. We do not receive or store your Apple or Google password.

Learning Data

To power your personalised study plan we store:

  • Your selected JLPT level and topic preferences
  • Vocabulary review history and SRS (spaced-repetition) scheduling data
  • Reading session activity (passages viewed, words looked up)
  • Daily study goals and streak counts

Device & Usage Data

We automatically collect certain technical information including device type, operating system version, app version, and crash reports. This data is used solely for diagnosing bugs and improving performance.

Subscription & Payment Data

If you subscribe to Parley Plus, purchases are processed by Apple (iOS) or Stripe (web). We receive a subscription status signal from RevenueCat and Stripe but never see or store your full credit card number.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide, maintain, and personalise the Service
  • To calculate and display your vocabulary progress and SRS review schedule
  • To process subscription purchases and restore entitlements
  • To send optional email notifications (e.g. streak reminders) if you opt in
  • To detect and prevent fraud or abuse
  • To comply with legal obligations

3. AI Features

Parley Plus uses large language model APIs (OpenAI and Anthropic) to generate reading passages and vocabulary explanations. When you trigger an AI-generated feature, relevant context (e.g. your JLPT level, a vocabulary word) is sent to these providers to generate a response. We do not send personally identifiable information such as your name or email to AI providers. Both providers process data under their own privacy policies and, where applicable, data processing agreements.

4. Information Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with:

  • Supabase — database and authentication infrastructure (hosted in the United States)
  • RevenueCat — subscription management (iOS)
  • Stripe — payment processing (web)
  • OpenAI / Anthropic — AI content generation (Parley Plus only)
  • Apple / Google — authentication providers
  • Vercel — web hosting
  • Legal authorities when required by applicable law

5. Data Retention

We retain your account and learning data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or fraud-prevention purposes.

6. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data. You can:

  • Export your learning data from the app settings
  • Delete your account and all associated data from app settings → Account → Delete Account
  • Contact us at privacy@tryparley.com for any other requests

7. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with their information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. International Transfers

Our infrastructure is primarily located in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the US, your data will be transferred to and processed in the US, which may have different data protection laws than your country.

9. Security

We use industry-standard measures including TLS encryption in transit, row-level security in our database, and access controls to protect your data. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.
